Long time No update

It has been some time since I updated half because I was a bit lazy the other half abit busy.  Things are good in Beijing, had a few job offers from other companies over the last few months so just seeing where that leads to.  Had a few friends visit from Canada so that’s been nice.  School is going fine and started another blog over at Business Week, so maybe that will help some people out, in their decision to go to Ivey or not.

Richard Ivey Here I Come

Well I was accepted into the Richard Ivey School of Business Hong Kong campus on January 13, 2007. The same day I found out that I was exempt from taking the GMAT’s.  Yes I was lucky enough to have the grades and experience to get in without taking them.  Although I think a lot of people are exempt, it still felt good. I had studied for those things for ever and not having to take them was a huge relief. Now some of you may ask why does someone who lives in Beijing travel 2.5 hours by plane go to school all the way in Hong Kong.  Simple I really felt that Ivey was the best program in the region. I think the reputation and the fact that if one day I go back to Canada that degree holds much more weight that a Chinese University and I really mean much more. Will let you know how my first few weeks go.

Knock OUT!

Ok this could only happen to me I am sure of it.  I was sitting at work yesterday and well I had to go to the bathroom the type where you have to sit down.  The washroom at my work is how should I say this nicely it’s built “weird” you have to step up about two feet to the toilets.
Well I finish my business and flushed the toilet as I stepped down form the two foot high pedestal I lost my footing on the wet marble floor which was like black ice and my feet came out from under me and I fall onto my back with all the grace of a (I could not think of an animal that had so little grace so can not do a comparison, but you get the picture I was no Spider Man)
I knocked the feet out from the guy in font of me who was minding his own business standing at the urinal doing his business he screamed I yelled as I landed on my thumb.  As we were both on the floor he was yelling at me and all I could say was sorry sorry sorry in Chinese, I won’t go into the details but he had stained his shirt.
My first thought was imagine if that had been my boss, second thought was dam I jammed my thumb it’s already swollen and my third thought was to get up and get the hell out of there and track down the guy who designed this bathroom and send him the medical bill for my broken finger.

My Trip to SANYA China April 2007

Getting a Hair Cut in China

Haircuts: Well I have been in China about 9 months now.  I have gotten my hair cut about 9 times in that period.  There are many places to get your haircut in China in the complex that I live in there is at least 6 different stores.   From the sign I know where I get my hair cut is a 100% officially registered Vidal Sassoon Salon I wonder if Vidal knows it (I highly doubt it). There are three haircutting guys at my place, and about 10 girls that sweep, give massages and wash your hair.  The hair dressers can be broken down as follows:
Mr. Mole: This guy has a mole on his neck with a huge hair growing out of it, and when I mean huge I really mean huge, we are talking at least half a foot, I am not sure when this fashion trend came into style I thought only Karate Masters that were a hundred had this, so I guess this means that in his off time he studies karate.  I have had 2 haircuts from him, his mole hair sometimes hits me in the face yes its gross as can be but it does tickle.
Long Nail: 3 haircuts from this man who has pinkly finger nail that I tell you it is 2 cm long and sharp as a knife, I have seen this individual clean out his ear wax with it about 1 minute before he cuts my hair.  Nice guy but the self grooming in the store in front of customers has to stop.  He likes popping zits on his face in front of everyone, NO I AM NOT KIDDING.
That 70’s Guy: This individual is by far the best haircutter and luckily for me I have gotten 5 of my haircuts from him.  The thing about him is he is a thinks its 1970 my buddy Luty needs to meet this guy, the fashion and the hairy chest and I am not kidding at least 6 gold chains are time traveled right from 1970.  Add in the 3 rings on each hand and the Magnium PI mustache and he puts a smile on your face every time, sometimes I have started to laugh sitting in the barber chair as this guy is just to funny to look at. So what does my 45 minute haircut, 2 washes, and a head massage cost me, just about 3 dollars toss in my regulatory 3 dollar tip 1.5 to the lady who washes my hair (I have a little crush on her) and 1.5 to the guy that cuts it. The end of every month when it is haircutting time is like going to Vegas, who will I get Mr. Mole, Finger Nail Man or 70’s dude, always a great way to start my day.
